The judging started around 9:00 and lasted a good part of the day.\u00c2\u00a0 During the first round, judged some of the Bocks and IPA&#8217;s during the second round.\u00c2\u00a0  There were about 20-30 judges in attendance from Mass\/RI\/NH homebrew clubs.<\/p>\n<p>During the competition we judged 274 beers, meads, and ciders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best of Show: <\/strong>Paul Zocco&#8217;s English Barleywine.<br \/>\n<strong>First runner-up:<\/strong> Matt Rodrigues&#8217; Christmas\/Winter Specialty Spiced Beer<br \/>\n<strong>Second runner-up:<\/strong> Justin Leeming&#8217;s American IPA.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Zocco also recieved the <strong>Brewmaster&#8217;s Choice award<\/strong>, selected by Megan Parisi of Cambridge Brewing Company, for his straight lambic.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Congratulations to ALL Winners!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The category results are available at <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/bhc.wort.org\/winners.shtml');\"  href=\"http:\/\/bhc.wort.org\/winners.shtml\">http:\/\/bhc.wort.org\/winners.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I enjoy participating in homebrew competitions.  Entering a beer into the competition or Judging\/Stewarding in the competition is a good way to learn more about beer.\u00c2\u00a0 I think this is my 5th or 6th competition that I have judged in.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in homebrewing, dive right in.\u00c2\u00a0 Go pick up a book or two.\u00c2\u00a0 Then go to your local homebrew supply store and pick up a homebrew kit.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have a local store, check out sites like &#8220;northern brewers&#8221; or another online supplier.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry about messing up.\u00c2\u00a0 Take the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Write down your notes and follow the steps in the recipie.\u00c2\u00a0 For your first brew, try an Ale.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe a Pale ale or an IPA.<\/p>\n<p>As they say in the North Shore Homebrewers club &#8211; &#8220;Go Brew Youself!!&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, I participated as a judge for the Boston Wort Homebrew competition.
