I ended up saving the batch by pitching three packets of US-05; I probably could have gotten away with two but I didn&#8217;t want to chance it.<\/p>\n<p>So today, I am making a starter for my next batch. An oak aged Imperial Stout. The guys over at <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.northernbrewer.com');\" title=\"NB\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbrewer.com\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Brewer<\/a> hooked me up with their\u00a0<a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.northernbrewer.com\/documentation\/beerkits\/ImperialStout.pdf');\" title=\"NB Imperial Stout Kit\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbrewer.com\/documentation\/beerkits\/ImperialStout.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Imperial Stout Extract Kit w\/ Specialty Grains<\/a> along with some American oak cubes, dark hard\u00a0Candi\u00a0sugar, 3lbs of clover honey, and <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.wyeastlab.com\/hb_yeaststrain_detail.cfm?ID=143');\" title=\"1728 Scottish Ale Yeast\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.wyeastlab.com\/hb_yeaststrain_detail.cfm?ID=143\" target=\"_blank\">Wyeast 1728 Scottish Ale yeast XL Activator Pack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While planning this batch, I figured it would probably be\u00a0beneficial if I had a stir plate to make my starter with, so I did a little research and found lots of good tutorials on how to make them from an old hard drive and a computer fan. This was great because I had both of them lying in old computer parts bins, actually I had every part I needed including a 1.5&#8243; stir bar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3941 aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid white;\" title=\"IMG_20101128_134011\" src=\"http:\/\/2beerguys.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_20101128_134011-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>It works damn good for a free\u00a0stir\u00a0plate. The only thing I&#8217;m not sure on is if the lights in the fan will have any effect on the yeast. Either way it looks\u00a0awesome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3936 aligncenter\" style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; padding: 0px;\" title=\"Stir plate spinning water\" src=\"http:\/\/2beerguys.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_20101123_174231-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/2beerguys.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_20101123_174231-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/2beerguys.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_20101123_174231-771x1024.jpg 771w, http:\/\/2beerguys.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_20101123_174231.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">As far as making the starter there&#8217;s really nothing special there&#8230;<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Measure out 2000ml of waster and 1.5cups of light DME.<\/li>\n<li>Boil for 15\u00a0minutes\u00a0and cool to ~70F.<\/li>\n<li>Pour into, in this case, a\u00a0sanitized\u00a0.5 gallon growler. ( a 2000L flask would be good as well)<\/li>\n<li>Shake a lot, add the sanitized\u00a0stir bar.<\/li>\n<li>Smack the Activator pack 3 hrs prior to making the starter.<\/li>\n<li>Pour in the yeast.
