A series inspired by the brewing traditions in the abbeys of Belgium, these beers are characterized by strong, rich flavors with fruity and robust wine-like characters that become more complex with careful aging. This series follows our 16° Saisons which have been available since Fall 2011.

A tribute to the history and stature of the pivotal Mystic Valley landmark and former farmer’s grain mill, the first batch of ‘Old Powderhouse Wheat Wine’ features a variety of hard, red winter wheat that was grown at Four Star Farms in Northfield, MA and malted by Valley Malt in Hadley, MA. Praised by artisanal bakers, the flavors contributed by this hardy grain are earthy and complex helping to create a robust and powerful beer worthy of its name and the spirit of independence to which it pays homage. For hops, only domestic varieties were used for ‘Old Powderhouse,’ combining with the rich flavors in the wheat for a bright and remarkably aromatic beer reminiscent of fresh, ripe fruit.

The wheat wine style of beer is a particularly American take on the traditional English strong ale style, Barley Wine. Unlike its English counterpart, wheat constitutes the majority of the grain in the beer and fruit and aromatic hops are at the fore, more akin to a Belgian abbey ale. On the dry side for a beer of its strength and style, ‘Old Powderhouse’ is remarkably drinkable at 11% ABV with subtle hints of alcohol coming through the fruity bouquet during the finish.

The recipe for this special release is the first crafted with Mystic Brewery by Alastair Hewitt, winner of over 150 homebrewing awards, including six best of show.

In celebration of the change in season, of new growth, and of the land we call home, we are pleased to offer ‘Old Powderhouse Wheat Wine’ for release throughout the state of Massachusetts this Spring. A release party and ‘Old Powderhouse’ keg-tapping will take place at the Cambridge Common restaurant at 1667 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge from 6-9pm on Wednesday, April 11th.

About Mystic Brewery

Mystic Brewery is located in Chelsea, Massachusetts, nestled in between the historic waterfront and the New England Produce Market.
