Field was drawn to the word Autocrat, one who rules with undisputed sway. It was then that their most delicious flagship product, Autocrat Coffee, got its name. Throughout the 1900s, ‘Gansett and Autocrat were the beverages of choice in New England. We present here our collaborative Coffee Milk Stout, a flavorful and smooth dark ale that pays homage to our shared heritage, while celebrating the art of craft brewing.”

Why We Chose This Beer:

Ashleigh:
Autocrat Coffee Milk Stout…to a non-Rhode Islander those words together can come across as initially confusing. However, when combined into a beer they are just one thing: delicious. This Narragansett seasonal is a blend of their milk stout with Autocrat Coffee, purveyors of the iconic coffee syrup used to make coffee milk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_milk). The beer, brewed under Sean Larkin, is dark brown with a long-lasting tan head, with a blend of chocolate, malts, and coffee.
The beer is a favorite when out for snowy shenanigans with friends in part due to the great taste at a low price point and also because: “It’s like an iced coffee in a can!” Coming from a place where iced coffee is a year round thing, this beer quickly entered our winter repertoire.

Kristie:
If you told me years ago that I’d be selecting Narragansett as my favorite winter beer, I’d assume I had some disastrous memory implant disaster and was not my real self, i.e. Total Recall. A lot of people think of Narragansett and they envision cheap tall boy lagers. Yes, those are still available but ‘Gansett has also branched out into a lot of craft offerings that are surprisingly…good.
Brewed by Revival brewmaster Sean Larkin, the new Narragansett is brewing not only quality smaller batches, but some pretty unique ones at that. I’ll admit, the Gansett/Autocrat mash-up has nostalgia marketing stunt written all over it. As one blogger wrote, “What next, a chorizo hefeweizen?” But this is a damn good milk stout! Nose is full of roasted coffee beans and milk chocolate. The flavor is roasted grains, a nice lactic character, with some milk chocolate sweetness, cocoa nibs, rich and with a light bitterness in the finish. So easy to drink, tasty and well-balanced. Plus the can is easy on the eyes and I like how it’s available in 6-packs.

About Two Girls One Beer:
Two Girls, One Beer is Kristie Martin and Ashleigh Bennett. It’s a place for us to review craft beers, so if you’re here looking for a spinoff of the video we mocked while naming this blog, you’ve come to the wrong place. If you want to talk IBU, ABV, and about whatever worts you may have going on…you’ve come to the right place.

What began as two girls brewing their first batch of beer because they were bored and broke on the Cape, has evolved into a passion. Brewpubs, festivals, homebrewing; we love to experience everything that the world of craft beer has to offer and love meeting new people who share the same appreciation. Two Girls, One Beer is our gal’s guide to the beer world of coastal New England. Look for our book on Rhode Island Beer, due out in Spring 2015 through the History Press.

You can usually recognize us as the chicks hovering over a plate of oysters or cheese, furiously scribbling beer notes onto cocktail napkins.

Kristie Martin, originally from Hyannis, MA, now resides in Providence, Rhode Island with her evil cat Meena. With a BA in English and Film and a history of restaurant management, she is now a Certified Beer Server, studying for her Cicerone and Beer Judge licenses and slinging brews at the What Cheer Tavern. Some of her hobbies include compulsively collecting cookbooks, making silly movies, fitness, homebrewing, and playing guitar (See: Cheri Love Affair: Cape Cod’s Favorite GG Allin Tribute Band). Her favorite beer styles are saisons and sours.

Ashleigh Bennett lives on Cape Cod, MA with her fiance and cats. She holds a BA in journalism and cultural anthropology, and works on the creative ensemble at Ignite 360, an insights and strategy firm in San Francisco. When not working, you can find her traveling to obscure places such as a Cramps themed airstream in the Mojave desert, or shooting and writing craft beer columns for magazines and BDC Wire. Aside from beer, hobbies include pole fitness, SCUBA, hiking, Harry Potter, sewing, reading, and eating fine cheese and oysters. She tries to homebrew, but whether or not the end result is indeed drinkable is up in the air. Favorite beer styles are Belgians and sours.

For more information check out twogirlsonebeer.com

About Narragansett Brewery:
Narragansett Beer is New England’s oldest beer, founded in 1890.
