Review - Magic Hat Brewing Company's Odd Notion (Winter 07)
"The first Odd Notion to be revealed is Dark Wheat Ale. Brewed with 50 percent malted wheat and lightly hopped, it is an enticingly deep brown, full-bodied ale with a slightly fruity nose of roasted malts. On the palate, it offers a rich roasted malt flavor and a distinctive character endowed with warm notes of cocoa, toffee, and caramel. Drinkers will find it has a low level of malt astringency.Malts: Pale, dark candy sugar, Chocolate, Malted Wheat, Munich. Hops: Hersbrucker SRM: 45.0, Gravity: 1.014, IBU: 25" -- Magic Hat Brewing Company
Pours a dark caramel color with a sizeable frothy light brown head with a dark translucence with lightly sticky lacing that falls away from the glass as the head retreats. The wheat in the beer is evident in the aroma as well as the alcohol, with a mostly malt dominated nose with very little hop presence. The first impression of the taste is a bit sweet which hangs around for a while, but shifts over to a bitter finish that also lasts and lasts. A bit of alcohol tinge at the end as well. Light to medium bodied, there's some creaminess in the texture and a good mouthfeel with some soft carbonation.
