Old No. 38

Review - North Coast Brewing Company's Old No. 38 Stout

"Named for a retired steam engine on the Ft.Bragg-Willits Skunk run through the California Redwoods, Old No.38 Stout is a smooth, firm-bodied stout with the toasted character and coffee notes of dark malts and roasted barley." -- North Coast Brewing

Pours a light caramel color that settles out a much darker caramel brown color producing a solid tan colored head with very watery lacing. The aroma is of strong dark bitter chocolate, is moderately malty with a creamy, delicious, sweet overtone. Initial taste is delicious, as it starts off lightly sweet and quickly jumps up on the bitterness scale towards the finish with some strong coffee flavor. Light to medium bodied, it\'s got a creamy texture with a well-balanced mouthfeel that turns dry after a while, soft carbonation at the end with some chocolate notes.
