Review - Harpoon Brewery's Leviathan Series: Baltic Porter
"Dark fruit and bittersweet chocolate notes meld into a spicy finish of this hearty beer made with de-husked roasted malts and a lager yeast." -- Harpoon Brewery
Pours a deep dark garnet tinted black color with a beautiful healthy tan colored head with good retention. Head almost completely dissipates leaving a thin wispy ring of lacing. Body is almost impervious to light allowing only just a bit of the garnet hues to be highlighted. Aroma is of light moderately roasted malts with some raspberry fruit/berry notes and some tobacco. Initial taste is very complex with hints of dates and raisins along with some dark chocolate notes that give off a wonderous blend of gentle bitterness blended with a warming alcohol overtone. Finishes with a deliciously creamy mouthfeel filled with more of the warm alcohol notes. Medium bodied, it has a light syrupy texture with sweet burnt chocolate malts and warming alcohol, leaving a slightly oily film on the mouth.
Very tasty, very drinkable, very smooth. Leaves our mouth happy, a very nice sipping beer sitting by a warm fire.
