Review - Abita Brewing Company's Turbodog

"Abita Turbodog is a dark brown ale brewed with Willamette hops and a combination of British pale, crystal and chocolate malts. This combination gives Turbodog its rich body and color and a sweet chocolate-toffee like flavor." -- Abita Beer Company

Pours a deep brown with a ruby red haze that produces a very nice tan colored frothy head. Slightly sticky lacing that actually looks like lace. Almost no light comes through except for allowing the red tint to show. Head has mostly diminished. The aroma is dominated by a nutty/roasted malt presence along with some molasses. The roasted nuts are a cross between a bag of peanuts and a lightly roasted coffee. Initial taste is loaded with roasted malts that give a very smooth character, and towards the finish it adds in some late hop bitterness that has a tinge of raisins. Softly carbonated, the Turbodog has a creamy body with moderate thickness. The finish leaves the mouth slightly dry, but not in bad shape.

The roasted nuts do not overpower this beer. It is smooth to drink and leaves the mouth in a slightly dry state -- but not harsh. It Turbodog invites you to have another sip.
