Barleywine

Review - Smuttynose Brewing Company's "Big Beer" Barleywine Style Ale

"Deep copper in color. Winter seasonal. Recipe, hops and abv% can vary somewhat from year to year. Now bottle-conditioned. " -- Smuttynose Brewing Co.

The Barleywine is an ass-kicker. Weighing in at 10% ABV, you must tread lightly through the big 22oz bottle. There is a powerful aroma right off of the pour, of moderate hops with flower and pine notes. The pour is a medium amber color with an average, frothy light-brown head. Good lacing over a hazy body. Initial flavor is lightly sweet, moving to slightly bitter at the finish. Alcohol presence is abundant in the finish, with lively carbonation. This brew was bottle-conditioned in 2006.
