Review - Smuttynose Brewing Company's IPA

"..You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they'll be quite pleased." -- Smuttynose Brewing Co.

This IPA from Smuttynose ranks with some of the best we've had. Pours a light amber color with virtually no head. Aroma's of strong hops with grapefruit and lemon notes. Initial flavor is heavy bitter, finishing moderately bitter. Fizzy carbonation on the mouth. Excellent.

Pours a fairly light yellow hue with a decent, fizzy to frothy white head with sticky lacing. Some activity in the body. Fair retention for the head. Having settled out, the color has darkened a bit to more of a dark yellow color. Aroma is of citrus hops with grapefruit overtones, which dominate and negate any malt notes that might be trying to come through. Initial taste is a harsh bitter with no balance, aggressive in nature, moving to a moderate bitter finish, still without any malt character.
