Harpoon Leviathan Series Baltic Porter Surfaces

Update to release news: Official 2Beerguys Review of Leviathan Baltic Porter.

Pours a deep dark garnet tinted black color with a beautiful healthy tan colored head with good retention. Head almost completely dissipates leaving a thin wispy ring of lacing. Body is almost impervious to light allowing only just a bit of the garnet hues to be highlighted. Aroma is of light moderately roasted malts with some raspberry fruit/berry notes and some tobacco.

Initial taste is very complex with hints of dates and raisins along with some dark chocolate notes that give off a wonderous blend of gentle bitterness blended with a warming alcohol overtone. Finishes with a deliciously creamy mouthfeel filled with more of the warm alcohol notes. Medium bodied, it has a light syrupy texture with sweet burnt chocolate malts and warming alcohol, leaving a slightly oily film on the mouth.

Very tasty, very drinkable, very smooth. Leaves our mouth happy, a very nice sipping beer sitting by a warm fire.

Harpoon Leviathan Series Baltic Porter Surfaces

Harpoon releases the 3rd beer from their Leviathan Series

Boston, MA (December 3, 2008) – The Harpoon Brewery has released the third beer in their Harpoon Leviathan Series, Baltic Porter. This is the latest offering from Harpoon’s Leviathan Series, the brewery’s limited edition line of big beers. Harpoon debuted the series in June with a wheat wine-style ale called Triticus, following it up in September with an Imperial IPA.

Harpoon Leviathan Baltic Porter is a dark, strong beer of considerable complexity. Brewed with a highly alcohol-tolerant strain of lager yeast, it has a smooth, full flavor with dark fruit and licorice notes in the aroma. De-husked roasted malt lends a dark chocolate character without being sharp or harsh. Raw sugar and dark crystal malt give some raisin and molasses notes while East Kent Goldings hops make for a long, earthy finish.

Harpoon’s Baltic Porter can be paired with wintertime food favorites such as steak, stew, aged cheeses, and chocolate desserts. Or it can be enjoyed on its own from a snifter or red wine glass.

Harpoon Leviathan Baltic Porter Statistics:

ABV: 9.5%

Harpoon Leviathan beers are brewed in 120-barrel batches. The third beer in the series, Baltic Porter, is now available in 4-packs and on draft. Photos and label graphics are available upon request.

Founded in 1986 on Boston’s waterfront, the Harpoon Brewery distributes its locally brewed products throughout the Northeast. In 2000 Harpoon purchased a second brewery in Windsor, VT to keep up with the growing demand. Harpoon’s line of craft beer features six year-round beers, including their award-winning IPA and UFO Hefeweizen beers, and four special seasonal selections. In 2003, Harpoon introduced a line of limited edition beers brewed every few months by a different Harpoon brewer called the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series. In 2007 Harpoon introduced Harpoon Cider, an all-natural hard cider made from freshly pressed, local apples. For more information visit www.harpoonbrewery.com.
