Julia Child died on August 16, 2004. Life has been a blur for me since I started this wonderful Ale House and so that date kind of has me reeling. I just looked it up and couldn’t believe it. I was sure she died only a few years ago, in fact it was before I even left my previous job.
I spent Saturdays watching Julia and Jacques Pepin – a french chef – making many wonderful, savory foods. It was too much for me to only standby and so I went out and bought Julia’s book Mastering The Art of French Cooking, which she co-authored with two French gals. This book mesmerized me, motivated me, inspired me and piqued my imagination.
I began cooking French at home. It is now to my very great surprise that we have not suggested, previously to this year, a Julia Child beer dinner. Perhaps we were not ready. In fact, we are never ready, but we will now do it. Taking primarily from her book, the Ale House chefs; Cindy, Trish, Mike, Jody and I (not a chef) will take on the 5 courses necessary to amaze, gratify and leave you trembling. We think we can do it, can you?
The Beers Are:
Summer’s End, Chair City, Oma’s Altbier, Face-off, Chocolate Porter
The Menu
- Course 1 – Summer’s End, Celery soup with potato, leeks and rice, Potage de céleri avec des pommes de terre, des poireaux et le riz
- Course 2 – Chair City Pale Ale, Trio of Stuffed Crepes, Trio des crepes farcies avec le cardon ; & de poireau de champignon; fromage fondu; asperge grillée avec le fraiche de crème de citron
- Course 3 – Oma’s Altbier, Sautéed creamy chicken with butter noodles, parsley, peas and herbed brown sauce, Poulet sauté avec les nouilles de beurre, le persil, les pois et la sauce brune aux fines herbes.
- INTERMISSION
- Course 4 – Face-off Double IPA, Bouef Bourginon, Bouef Bourginon – By any other name it isn’t bouef bourginon.
- Course 5 – Chocolate Porter, Apple tart with apricot glaze, Tarte aux pommes avec le lustre d’abricot
