Inspired by Breckenridge’s Variety

It’s a day away from the start of North Shore Craft Beer week and an appropriate time to write my first blog/review for 2BeerGuys.com.

I came to the realization long ago that good beer is rarely inexpensive. On a recent trip to my local beer purveyor a single bottle ran me about $13. I know it doesn’t come as groundbreaking news to most of you that read this; it’s just to show that those of us who have eliminated the ‘-iser’s’ of the world from our palate are willing to pay a premium price for a premium product.

When one would like to save some hard earned cash on beer, the mix twelve pack is a great place to get many beers for a good price. The problem I have found is that usually one beer in the mix is just not on the same level as the other two or three. On the same trip I came across a 12 pack from a brewery that I tried one of their beers a few months back and for around the price of that single bottle, I could bring home twelve. As I left, happy with my purchase I thought that there is no way that this brewery could produce four different brews that were all at the top of their game, I was wrong. Breckenridge brewery out of Denver, CO has blown me away.

I will admit, I do not have the most advanced palate to pick apart a beer for each and every flavor and nuance that it contains, but I am pretty sure that everyone knows when they have a top notch beer in their hand. My first experience with Breckenridge was in June when I picked up a bottle of their vanilla porter. That beer was, and is one of the most interesting porters I have had. The sweet of the vanilla is not overpowering on the nose, but when it hit’s the tongue it lets you know that this is there. Very smooth and balanced with the vanilla up front and a nice smoky finish. Add in an easy drinking 4.7 ABV and you can have a few without getting too tipsy.

Lucky U IPA

The one that really surprised me was the first one I took out of the 12 pack, their Lucky U IPA, paying homage to the Tivoli brewery of Denver. Be warned, this is not a beginners IPA. The hops are up front and reminiscent of what I would consider a proper imperial IPA should be, even though it is not labeled as such. The flavor is in your face, piney, and with no hit of over sweetness that plagues many IPA’s that are heavily hopped. I would put Lucky U up against any other IPA or imperial IPA out there.

Breckenridge has done a top notch job creating a mix twelve pack for a very reasonable price that could be priced higher and still be worth it. It is now possible to acquire a twelve pack that has no “duds” as it also features there Avalanche amber ale and Dark oatmeal stout that drink very well.

Until next time, keep your glass full and your mind open…
