Why I selected the Holidale from Berkshire Brewing:

There are many signs that the holiday season is approaching, and for me, the release of the Berkshire Brewing Company’s Holidale is the first and the best sign.

Holidale is a big barleywine, and each and every sip makes me jolly, kind of like St. Nick. Maybe it is the high alcohol getting me tipsy, but I like to think it is because it is an awesome beer.

The beer changes slightly every year. This year’s version has a strong grassy hop flavor, to go along with big caramel and biscuity flavors. There are flavors of dry fruits, and maybe even a little cocoa on the finish. It is almost like a liquid and alcoholic fruit cake, except one that you would really want.

While many people will be leaving a glass of milk and a plate of cookies on Christmas Eve, I will be giving him what he really wants, a bomber of Holidale to warm him up, and a plate of nice bleu cheese to pair with it.

About the Beer Nut:
Norman Miller really, really enjoys beer, and gets to share his love weekly by writing his Beer Nut column for the MetroWest Daily News and about 100 other newspapers throughout the country, as well as the Beer Nut blog. He hopes to one day to take a cross country beer trip from Massachusetts to Portland, Oregon, with stops in between. He also implores every brewery to brew a coconut-chocolate stout.
