Beer: Face Plant Doppelweizen
Brewery: Bayern Brewing, Missoula, MT
Beer Details:

  • Style: Doppelweizen
  • ABV: 7.5%
  • IBUs: unknown

Commercial Description: This top-fermented, unfiltered Wheat Bock beer is the counterpart to Bayern’s famous Doppelbock Lager and is decoction-brewed, a technique used often in Bavaria but seldom in the US.

The recipe uses five types of malt (Wheat, Pilsener, Carmel, Munich and Chocolate), and has an o.g. of > 17 % Plato, producing a stout 7.5 % Alc. by Vol. As with all Bayern wheat beers, Face Plant surprises with its complex flavor. German Hallertauer Perle hops give this hearty Bock beer a perfectly balanced sweetness.

Why I selected the Face Plant Doppelweizen by Bayern Brewing:

This is a fantastic seasonal selection from Montana’s first craft brewery that serves as a signal that winter is here – at least by the temperatures, flying snow, and the start of ski season.  It’s dark brown color, ruby highlights and biscuit colored head suggest you’re in for a stout-ish treat, but the beer surprises with its smooth, roasted wheat flavor, complex depth, and a touch of bitterness in the finish.

Bayern prides itself on brewing German styles not often seen in American craft breweries and this one has a wonderfully different flavor and character.  It just feels like winter, and even our “light beer” friends anxiously await the arrival of Face Plant each year.  It’s so smooth and tasty, in fact, that it’s a beer to be careful with, lest you end up like the drawing on the label.
