Coordinator of the Lowell Ribs n Brew dies unexpectedly

It is rather depressing to start a day off like this, but I wanted to share this local news story. Andrew St. Onge worked for the city of Lowell as the special events coordinator. He’s helped organize most of the events that have occurred within the City for many years, including the very popular folk festival and a co-coordinator for the Ribs n Brew festival. He will be missed by many.

LOWELL — Andrew St. Onge, Lowell’s longtime special-events coordinator, died suddenly late last night of what is believed to be a brain aneurysm.

While the details of his death were unavailable last night, Mayor Edward “Bud” Caulfield said St. Onge died suddenly at around 10 p.m., in his home on Andover Street in Lowell.

As word circulates of St. Onge’s death today, Caulfield said he expects City Hall and the community will be shocked and saddened by the loss.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to his family,” Caulfield said last night.

As the special-events coordinator for the past decade, St. Onge has had a hand in every major event in Lowell, from the Folk Festival to Riverfest.

“Every major function, Andy was there,” Caulfield said. “He did an incredible job for the city. He was such a hands-on kind of guy. If there was something going on in the city, he was involved.”

Caulfield said he bumped into St. Onge earlier in the week and he seemed fine.

“He was upbeat, and everything was great,” Caulfield said.

St. Onge was as much of a fixture at the local YMCA as he was at City Hall, Caulfield said.

Yesterday morning, Caulfield said he had gone on the local radio station and thanked St. Onge for the work he has done for the upcoming Mayor’s Harvest Ball. “There is such a void left by Andy’s passing,” Caulfield said
