2009 Boston Wort Homebrew Competition Results

On Saturday, I participated as a judge for the Boston Wort Homebrew competition. The judging started around 9:00 and lasted a good part of the day.  During the first round, judged some of the Bocks and IPA’s during the second round.  There were about 20-30 judges in attendance from Mass/RI/NH homebrew clubs.

During the competition we judged 274 beers, meads, and ciders.

Best of Show: Paul Zocco’s English Barleywine.
First runner-up: Matt Rodrigues’ Christmas/Winter Specialty Spiced Beer
Second runner-up: Justin Leeming’s American IPA.

Paul Zocco also recieved the Brewmaster’s Choice award, selected by Megan Parisi of Cambridge Brewing Company, for his straight lambic.

Congratulations to ALL Winners!!

I enjoy participating in homebrew competitions. Entering a beer into the competition or Judging/Stewarding in the competition is a good way to learn more about beer.  I think this is my 5th or 6th competition that I have judged in.

If you are interested in homebrewing, dive right in.  Go pick up a book or two.  Then go to your local homebrew supply store and pick up a homebrew kit.  If you don’t have a local store, check out sites like “northern brewers” or another online supplier.

Don’t worry about messing up.  Take the challenge.

Write down your notes and follow the steps in the recipie.  For your first brew, try an Ale.  Maybe a Pale ale or an IPA.

As they say in the North Shore Homebrewers club – “Go Brew Youself!!”
