Other Harpoon Helps News: Last Tuesday, we had a dozen volunteers join us at Room to Grow , a non-profit with offices in Boston and New York dedicated to enriching the lives of babies born into poverty. They accept donated clothing, books, toys, and other items for children under the age of 3. Our mission on Tuesday was to sort these donations by size and prepare them to go directly into the hands of families living in poverty. Carrie Marshall, Inventory and Volunteer Coordinator at Room to Grow, hosted us for the evening. We asked her a couple questions and here is what she had to say…

Tell us about Room to Grow. Room to Grow is a three-year program dedicated to enriching the lives of babies born into poverty. Clients meet with their Room to Grow social worker every three months from the third trimester of pregnancy through the child’s third birthday.

What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is leading volunteer projects. I enjoy creating a fun and friendly environment and helping volunteers realize how their efforts are directly helping families in need. I have met so many wonderful volunteers and it is so amazing to see people giving their time and energy to help others who are less fortunate.

What is the most requested item from the families you help? I think our most needed item is board books (early reader books age NB-2y). Parents choose 10 books at each visit as part of our early literacy project aimed at helping parents read to their infants and toddlers and use reading as a means to bond with the child.

What is coming up for Room to Grow? Twice a year we hold our seasonal switch – changing out our current inventory of baby clothes in preparation for the upcoming season. Our next switch will be in September and we are always looking for extra volunteer support – both individuals and groups!

What is your favorite Harpoon beer? My favorite Harpoon beer is Winter Warmer. I look forward to it every holiday season! Read more of the interview on our blog at http://blog.harpoonhelps.com. For more information on Room to Grow, visit www.roomtogrow.org, or follow them on twitter !

Another Chance to Give!
A couple of years ago, our friends at ibex clothing came on board as a sponsor of our two fundraising cycling rides, the Harpoon Point to Point, and the Brewery to Brewery ride. They just let us know about a donation opportunity they have going on, and we want to help! Drop off your old warm winter clothing to ibex’s new store at 303 Newbury Street in Boston, or mail it to their headquarters in Vermont, and they’ll donate it to the people of Japan. For more information, visit http://www.ibexwear.com/donate. As always, visit www.harpoonhelps.com” to see what is coming up! We look forward to volunteering with you!
