Beer: Midnight Brett Ale
Brewery: Allagash Brewing Company, Portland Maine

Beer Details:

  • Style: American Wild Ale
  • ABV: 7.3%

Commercial Description:
Midnight Brett is chocolate brown in color, brewed with 2-Row, Midnight wheat, raw wheat and rye malt. It was hopped with a blend of Perle, Glacier and Simcoe hops. The beer was fermented with our house strain of Brettanomyces in stainless tanks. The finished beer has the aroma and flavor of fresh berries, sour cherries and a slight roasted character. The finish is pleasantly tart and fruity making this beer very drinkable.

Why I selected Midnight Brett Ale:
While not strictly a holiday beer, a roasty, tart and fruity beer does feel festive. I picked up this 375-mL bottle at their Black Friday beer release–it was previously draft only, but is now out in a limited bottle release.

It’s perfect for when you want a dark beer on a cold night, but aren’t in the mood for anything sweet. Midnight Brett pours dark brown (midnight, almost?) with a thin off-white head and has an earthy, roasty aroma with notes of cherry and funk. Taste is dark fruit goodness and tart Brett with notes of chocolate.

Allagash never disappoints with their Brett beers (or any of their beers, really), and this is a perfect alternative winter warmer.
