Beer: Smuttynose Robust Porter
Brewery: Smuttynose Brewing Company, Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Beer Details:

  • Style: American/Robust Porter
  • ABV: 6.2%
  • IBU: 43

Commercial Description:
This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

Why we selected Smuttynose Robust Porter:
Kristie: I know this beer is available year-round, but I still had to pick it as my favorite beer to drink in the winter. Bittersweet chocolate, accompanied by a clean roast character lead into some toasty grains and a dry finish. Not only is it a perfect representation of a classic porter, but it’s incredibly easy to drink, making it my go-to on cold winter evenings.

Ashleigh: I usually only drink porters when it’s cold out, which is one of the reasons we felt it was a fitting beer to pick in the winter. This beer has hints of chocolate malts, coffee, and vanilla and finishes up with a nice dry feel and char taste. It’s a nice blend of warm tastes for the cold weather and has just enough weight to it that it fills you up.
