Beer: Bad Santa Cascadian Dark Ale
Brewery: Pelican Pub & Brewery, Pacific City, OR

Beer Details:

  • Style: Cascadian Dark Ale
  • ABV: 6.7%
  • ABV: 70

Commercial Description:
This mysterious dark elixir is filled with complex malt flavors and aromas with toasted malt and roast character, blending seamlessly to the alluring herbal hop aroma that comes from copious amounts of Fuggle hops. Bad Santa doesn’t care if you’ve been naughty or nice, he wants this beer on your list.

Why I  selected the Bad Santa:
I selected Bad Santa because by this point in the holiday season, we can all use a bit of levity. I can’t hear the words “bad santa” without thinking of the classic, holiday movie of the same name. Okay, maybe Bad Santa isn’t on everyone’s holiday classic list, but who can forget Billy Bob Thornton as a foul mouthed, heavy drinking, con-man santa, who’s a walking highlight reel of embarrassment. You know, like that weird uncle in your family no one want to invite over for Christmas dinner.

As for the beer, this is a black IPA for those, like me, who prefer far more in their cascadian dark ales that a little black color. This one is full of roasted goodness and even a hint of smoke playing off an almost creamy, medium bodied mouthfeel. Bitterness is definitely present throughout, but never overpowers the flavors. Tangy, citrus spice seems to be a fitting description of the hops flavors in this excellent beer.
