Why I selected the von Trapp Trosten Lager:

The 31 Beers of December is one of my favorite times of the year.  But it can also be CRAZY!  On one hand, it’s nerve racking and somewhat tense to make sure that a new beer is posted every day.  On the other hand, I am thankful to have an opportunity to collaborate with others around the country (sounds pretty corny, but true).  It is the beer friendships that inspire the 2Beerguy family and drive us to contribute to the community.

Making a selection this year wasn’t easy.  I really wasn’t sure which beer to share, as there are so many great beers to select.  As I started to research, I realized that I had the perfect selection staring at me already.  It was the von Trapp Trosten lager.  Troten, which means comfort / console in German, is perfect for the holiday season.  A warm embrace always makes you feel better.  It’s time to reflect and reach out to the ones you love and give them a hug.

Now, on to the beer!

Trosten pours a dark brown, murky body with a small off light brown head.  The head quickly diminishes, leaving white lacing on the glass.  Sweet malt aroma, paired with soft smokey notes caught my attention.  Not overly smokey, like a campfire, but rather subtle and inviting.

The smokey notes are dominant in the initial taste, increasing into a strong smokey finish.  Behind the smoke, rich chocolate notes emerge.  As expected, the hop bitterness is rather light, creating a balance taste with the malts.

I recommend picking up Trosten for this winter season.  Don’t be to worried about the smokey notes, as the rich chocolate flavors increase as you sip on.   For optimal experience, find a fireplace and a special some one to share Trosten with.

What would you pair this beer with?

Um…… Ignace Beef Stew, could there be any other options? (Um No!)  Check out the special recipe on 2Beerguys.com.

About von Trapp Brewing:
It was more than a decade ago when Johannes von Trapp started thinking about starting a brewery at his family’s lodge in Stowe, Vermont. He had a dream to brew an American version of the tasty lagers he enjoyed so much during trips to the countryside near his ancestral Austrian home.

With this dream in mind, Johannes worked to start a brewery at Trapp Family Lodge. It became a reality in the spring of 2010, when von Trapp Brewery officially opened. Our brewery was originally a modest facility located in the lower level of the Lodge’s DeliBakery. We currently brew around 60,000 gallons of lager each year, with brews available year-round and seasonally. In 2015 we opened our new 40,000 sq. ft. brewery located on Luce Hill Rd. featuring a Rolec Brew House and capable of producing up to 50,000 barrels of beer annually. You can enjoy our beers at the Lodge or in multiple restaurants and bars throughout Vermont.
