Cape Ann Capers…Grand Opening January 8, 2011

Cape Ann Brewing - Welcome Board

Enticed by the promise of some killer Fisherman’s brews and the grand opening of Cape Ann Brewing Company’s new location, we bundled up and braved the snowy winter night. As Sean, Chris and I pulled up in front of their new brewery space (located at 11 Roger Street in Gloucester, Ma, directly across the parking lot from their old digs) we were lured in by the fermentation tanks behind the huge windows at the front of the building.

As we entered (at the right side of the building) we were immediately welcomed by Jeremy, Dylan, TJ, Tom and Walt. The room was overflowing with brewers/home brewers, writers and supporters of Cape Ann. A generous buffet was offered to patrons as they entered as well as a hefty array of passed appetizers.

After chatting for a while, our palates were ready to be wowed by some fantastic brews. I had to have my favorite Pumpkin Stout and Sean tried the Imperial Pumpkin Stout. Yum. Other offerings of the night included, Greenhorn Double IPA, Fisherman’s Brew, Navigator (German Doppelbock) Pumpkin Stout brewed with coffee and vanilla to name a few.

The guys at Cape Ann work hard to keep their beers exciting and it shows. Each Tuesday night, TJ/Tom host a homebrew night at 6pm and also keep things fun offering trivia night, knitting night and beer dinners. You can find these guys everywhere from Faneuil Hall ( they recently had a throw down with Ipswich Brewery) to The Castle in Boston for the Beer Summit’s to just about any beer event you can imagine. They are always welcoming and are easy to spot in a crowd donning bright orange fishing overalls.

From the vast bar, you can watch the game as well as get a view of the new kitchen. The long pub style tables are great for getting together with friends as well as making new ones. From your table, you look through floor to ceiling windows onto a patio and further to amazing view of the ocean. Word is, the menu offers something for everyone including a killer haddock sandwich that has been highly endorsed by several locals. The patio, although currently covered in snow, promises warm lazy days (with beer in hand) overlooking the boat speckled harbor) Ahhh….can’t wait!

Even though Cape Ann’s doors have only been open for a short while, they have created a great local vibe that gives the sense as though it’s always been there, nestled along Gloucester Harbor. I highly recommend stopping by for a pint or stay for dinner!
